Incredibly rare Atlantic Records pre-release promotional copy of Led Zeppelin’s debut album. These promotional copies were prepared by Atlantic Records for radio station airplay several months before the official release date. Therefore, this promotional copy can be dated not according to the album’s release date of 1969, but the late 1968. Possibly, this explains the fact that the runout grooves of this promo copy contain the “RG”, which I haven’t come across with on the commercial release pressings. The “RG” are the initials of Rob Grenell, the mastering engineer who worked for Atlantic Records studio in the 60s. What I’m completely confident about is that his initials are present on the “Atlantic Recording Studios” white label test pressing with the “11 West 60th Street, N.Y., N.Y. 10023” address. The front cover contains an orange “Promotional Copy Not For Sale” sticker affixed directly to the cover underneath the shrink wrap. Pre-release Atlantic Records white promotional label with the SD-8216 catalog number, Atlantic Records’ fan logo and a “Sample Copy Not For Sale” banner. The “PR” suffix at the label’s center bottom center identifies this issue as a Presswell Records Manufacturing Company pressing. The rim text reads “Mfd. By Atlantic Recording Corp., 1841 Broadway, New York, N.Y.”. The full matrix numbers, including Rob Grenell’s “RG” initials are as follows: Side 1 - ST-A-681461-A AT RG W / Side 2 - ST-A-681462-A AT RG W. The album comes with an original Atlantic Records “Aretha Franklin Soul’69” inner sleeve which came with the Atlantic Records releases from 1968 to 1969.

The cover remaining in its original factory shrink wrap is in pristine Near Mint condition. I grade the vinyl as somewhere between Strong Very Good and Very Good Plus. It preserves its glossy factory lacquer but contains some light non-feelable surface hairlines, marks as well as scuffs from the inner sleeve, which is in Near Mint Minus condition. The beautiful white labels are in Excellent Minus condition only having some light spindle marks seen under a strong light source. The vinyl plays well throughout but has some light static, occasional background noise and a series of ticks, which most likely get reduced if the record is professionally cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine.
