Songs by Lead Belly 78 rpm Record Album Leadbelly Sonny Terry
In a recent basement clean out, I came across a few albums of 78s, made, I guess, for use on a Victrola.
This one is Songs by Lead Belly, Accompanied by Sonny Terry, a three record set produced by Asch Records in New York. Its Asch Records Number is A343, and it has six songs (one song on each side):
"Good Morning Blues" (343-1A)
"How Long" (343-1B)
"Ain’t You Glad" (343-2A)
"John Henry" (343-3A)
"On a Monday" (343-3B)
Except for a slightly musty smell and a patina of age, both the album covers and the records are in remarkably good shape. I do not own a Victrola and, therefore, have not been able to play the records, but I can see no reason why they would not play perfectly well. The records seem to have only superficial marks - no serious scratches.
I am not a record expert and have no idea how to grade this album or estimate how rare it may or may not be, but a little research shows that it was probably recorded in the late 1930s or early 1940s, before Moses Asch founded Folkways Records. It certainly seemed to contribute to Leadbelly’s fame and the "discovery" of folk music in postwar America.
Please let me know if you have any questions, and I’ll do my best to answer them.
