Description

For all Joy Division/New Order/Factory collectors, here is a copy of Joy Division's earliest release, one of only 1000 issued in 1978. And...this copy has autographs from the entire band including Ian Curtis!

AUTHENTICITY: This copy has all the distinguishing characteristics of an original as described on the Joy Division Central website at http://www.joydiv.org/I3.htm.

First, the record itself:
1. There is a serrated band about 1.5 mm wide pressed into the vinyl, located just outside the edge of the label.
2. The matrix numbers are handwritten and very small (about 1 mm tall).
3. The initials "EG" appear in the run-out grooves on both sides. They are just a hair over 1 mm tall.
4. There is only about 1.5 mm between the printed copyright information and the edge of the label.
5. The label has a matte finish. Only the faintest hint of a sheen can be detected under very close inspection.
6. The contours of the label area match those of an original.

The cover:
1. The paper is a creamy white and feels close to cover stock in weight–much thicker than ordinary printer/copier paper but a bit lighter than a standard index card.
2. The printscreen dots are clearly visible in all illustrations.

The last two scans shown here are tracings of the matrix inscriptions, so that you can see their size and position relative to the labels.

Autographs: See "Provenance" section below.

CONDITION:
Record: VG
A few small scuffs and nicks can be seen. No skips, cracks, major scratches or pops. Minor surface noise is evident throughout but is generally superseded by the level of the music. There are very faint spindle marks in the center of the record.
Cover: VG+
There is minor blunting/scuffing of the corners and faint creasing along the right edge when looking at the folded cover from the front. There are three small rust-colored spots along the edges of the paper and one hard-to-see water spot to the right of the personnel credits.

PROVENANCE: I purchased this item in 1993 from Trevor Shaiken, a collector in Canada. He in turn bought it from Mick Popper, a UK dealer and frequent advertiser in Record Collector magazine at the time.

According to Shaiken, the original owner of the 7" also owned a club where Joy Division once played. This person had three autographed copies, sold two, and kept one for himself.

The most compelling argument in favor of the autographs' authenticity, to me, is the authenticity of the record itself. I do not believe that anyone possessing an authentic copy would mar it with false signatures.

SHIPPING: Both the disc and cover are housed in their own plastic sleeves and will be shipped bubble-wrapped in a sturdy cardboard mailer.

At the end of the auction, I will e-mail you with the exact shipping charges based on your location, choice of carrier and the final value to be insured. I prefer to ship via UPS or FedEx because we have had problems with both the U.S. Postal Service and DHL. Insurance is required because once the package is shipped, I will not be held responsible for any loss or damage. International buyers, please be aware that I will be completely honest on any customs forms and you must pay your own customs fees.

Beware--the eBay shipping calculator does not seem to be accurate! You can estimate shipping costs via ups.com or fedex.com instead. You will need to know the ship-from zip code (60647 for UPS and 60622 for FedEx), the package weight (1 pound) and dimensions (16 in. x 14 in. x 1 in.). Don't forget to declare the full amount of your bid for insurance.

I will e-mail you the tracking number as soon as I have shipped your package.

You may also pick up the record in person within the city of Chicago.

PAYMENT: PayPal only, please.

Please e-mail me with any questions. I will do my best to answer them within 24 hours. High-resolution scans are available upon request.

I have other Joy Division/Factory Records-related items for sale (not yet on eBay), including a Durutti Column Sordide Sentimental 7". Please send your want lists if you are interested.

Good luck and happy bidding!

Edit: There are 6 high-resolution scans which are HUGE (50-80 MB each). I can forward them to you via YouSendIt, but please be warned that it takes about 3 hours to transfer all of them. Please allow plenty of time before the end of the auction. Thank you.
