Description

John Heartsman & Circles Music of My Heart Private 2LP Ultra-rare self-released 1976 LP from a Bay Area soul/funk legend.
Guitarist Johnny Heartsman was a huge presence on the Bay Area blues and soul scenes in the late 1950s and early to mid-1960s. In 1967, he retreated to Modesto in the Central Valley, where he supported himself playing lounge gigs.
This 1976 release features a trio, with Heartsman playing not just guitar, but also organ, flute, bass, organ bass, piano, synthesizer and vocals. The mighty J.J. Funderburk backs him on drums. Janice Lavon plays tambourine and sings on several tracks. There are about five live tracks and the rest are studio recordings.
There are numerous standout tracks but some highlights include the brisk lounge-funk of "Talking About My Baby", the very similar "Who Do You Love", a cool cover of Grover Washington. Jr.'s "Mr. Magic", an otherworldly take on Luis Bonfa's "A Day in the Life of a Fool", two versions of "Silky Pete" (an instrumental which sounds a little like Sly & the Family Stone's "Just Like a Baby"), the mellow soul of "Up from Down" and the eerie psychedelic flute funk of "The Road to Nowhere".
This record does not turn up, even in the Bay Area. I learned of this album in the mid-1990s and it took me nearly 10 years to find a copy, even regularly scouring stores and record shows throughout the region. I will hate to see this one go, but I have some grown-man life changes to pay for. C'est la vie.
There is a $1,000 reserve on this LP, which is modest consdering what the last copy auctioned on eBay sold for.   John Heartsman & Circles: Music of My Heart 2LP (no label VC-4508, 1976)
Condition:Vinyl: VG+Cover: VG+
The LPs are clean, glossy and virtually unplayed but there are two marks which detract from the LPs' condition. On the bluesy "You Are the Music of My Heart", there is a small white mark that causes the record to skip; it looks like something stuck in the grooves that might come off with a good soak or cleaning, but I have not attempted it. On one of the versions of "Silky Pete" there is also a light mark that causes some moderate clicks for seven or eight revolutions. There is occasional mild crackle on the records, which seem to stem from the pressing rather than any wear on the discs. Finally, the second disc has a miniscule dish warp; it does not affect play or cueing but, hey, full disclosure.
The labels are clean and without spindle wear. There is a small misprint on the label of the second side (it looks like it was hit with a stamper twice).
The cover is generally clean, inside and out. On the front cover, there are two light stains, one in the upper-right corner and one in the lower-right corner. The back cover has modest ringwear and a little bit of grime. On the left panel of the gatefold, someone has written a name, a phone number and "$1000." The seams are beautiful but for a tiny bit of damage to the upper-left corner of the back cover; there's some very minor bending and a 1/4" split where the seam meets the opening.
I'm happy to provide sound clips and additional photos for anyone with questions about the condition of the LP.
