1.58-2S/N: This is an authorized second printing poster for James Brown at the famed Apollo Theater in New York, 7/28/1966. This reprint was done in 1995, specifically for the fact that James Brown was to sign them. This poster is signed by the legendary James Brown in black ink. This poster was printed by Colby Press, an old-time “letter press” printer that printed the original poster in 1965. To do this print, they had to find the original steel plate, engraving, and wood black to do it again. We contacted Mr. Brown to set up a signing when he was out in California. One day we got a phone call that he wanted to meet us at his hotel in Los Angeles the next day. So we then left San Francisco to meet him at his hotel. Meeting Mr. Brown was, in itself, an extraordinary experience. First, you note that, he calls everyone Mr., Mrs., or Ms., regardless of whether they are a powerful music broker, or the guy who sweeps the floors at night. He also expects you to do the same, both with himself and his retinue. Thus, that is why I refer to him as Mr. Brown and not James Brown. Business with Mr. Brown is very tainted by what black performers in particular, had to deal with in the music business. Because of the times they were financially taken advantage of, we had to pay Mr. Brown in cash, non-sequential bills, before the signing (some people refer to this as a Chuck Berry, because Chuck Berry is widely known for not going on any stage until he is paid, given his experiences in the past). You will also notice that Mr. Brown’s signature is not picture perfect, however, it is what he does and having been there personally for the signing, I will attest to their authenticity. One of the single greatest impressions that I walked away with was the shear charisma that seemed to literally drip out of Mr. Browns pours at every moment. I have met many people, but none have approached the sheer charisma that he exudes so naturally. As I have said many times before, nearly all (90-95%) of signatures are phony. I personally guarantee the authenticity of these James Brown signatures, and have thumb-printed the back right hand corner with my thumbprint as well as attest to the authenticity of the signature. This is a must have for any James Brown collector, the Godfather of Soul has given all of you a chance at a piece of history. Published by Phil Cushway of ArtRock. Poster measures 22 X 30.5.
