BRIEF ARTIST DESCRIPTION

(Scroll Down For Album Details And Supersize Pictures)

John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers are a pioneering English blues band, led by singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist John Mayall,  The ‘Bluesbreakers’ name was used by Mayall between 1963 and ‘68 then dropped for some fifteen years, in 1982 a ‘Return of the Bluesbreakers’ was announced and it has been kept since then.

The Bluesbreakers were formed in January 1963 and became an ever-evolving lineup of more than 100 different combinations of musicians. Eric Clapton joined in 1965 just a few months after the release of their first album. Clapton brought the blues influences to the forefront of the group, as he had left The Yardbirds in order to play the blues. The group lost their record contract with Decca that year, which also saw the release of a single called “I’m Your Witchdoctor” (produced by Jimmy Page), followed by a return to Decca in 1966. The album Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton (also known as The Beano Album because Clapton is shown on the cover photo reading a copy of the comic) was released later that year; it reached the Top Ten in the UK.

Clapton and Jack Bruce left the group that year to form Cream. Clapton was replaced by Peter Green for

A Hard Road, after which he left to form Fleetwood Mac. Finally, in 1969, the third Bluesbreaker-guitarist departed when Mick Taylor joined the Rolling Stones.

With some interruptions, the Bluesbreakers have continued to tour and release albums (over 50 to date), though they never achieved the critical or popular acclaim of their earlier material. In 2003, Eric Clapton, Mick Taylor and Chris Barber reunited with the band for John Mayall’s 70th Birthday Concert in Liverpool.  In November 2008 John Mayall announced on his website he was disbanding the Bluesbreakers to cut back on his heavy workload and give himself freedom to work with other musicians.

ALBUM DESCRIPTION

Bare Wires was the first Bluesbreakers album of new studio material since

A Hard Road, released 16 months before. In that time, the band had turned over entirely, expanding to become a septet, John Mayall, Chris Mercer, Dick Heckstall-Smith, Henry Lowther, Jon Hiseman, Tony Reeves and Mick Taylor. Mayall's musical conception had also expanded, the album begins with a 23-minute "Bare Wires Suite," which included more jazz influences than usual and featured introspective lyrics. The combinaton of the different styles of these top musicians is stunning in places. As the album saw Mayall take a move away from the strict Blues genre it isn't surprising that he dropped the "Bluesbreakers" name after this release. The album was Mayall's most successful ever in the U.K., hitting number three in the charts.

Dick Heckstall-Smith, Jon Hiseman and Tony Reeves went on to work together in Colosseum, Mick Taylor became guitarist for the Rolling Stones. Tony Reeves was a regular member of the Keef Hartley Band and has collaborated with a huge selection of artists since including, Buzzcocks, Talk Talk Humphrey Littleton and The Charlie Watts Band.

Recorded at Decca West Hampstead Studios, April 1968

Produced by Mike Vernon (Blue Horizon Label Founder) and John Mayall

THE AUDIO

The audio on my systems the audio is superb beautiful mono reproduction no distortion at all, it plays through with no skips, jumps, pops or clicks, apart from the very odd bit of static/dirt noise in some quiet sections it sounds superb in my opinion, in fact apart from the static type noise I heard very occasionally the audio is pretty close to mint.  (Obviously with an album of this age the odd bit of static has to be allowed for, a good professional clean would be helpful as I did notice some debris on the surface after test playing the album) To err on the side of caution I am going to rate the audio conservatively as Excellent Plus.

THE VINYL

On initial visual inspection the vinyl is really superb, the glossy heavy vinyl looks beautiful and lays perfectly flat on the turntable, on initial visual inspection I can see no sounding needle marks scratches or scuffs at all, not a hint of groovewear. Only under an angled light can any slight sleeve removal type marks be seen.

THE LABELS

The Decca mono labels look superb, clean with no marks or writing with a minimal amount of spidering. The spindle holes are perfectly round no signs of wear, exceptionally rare to find in a 42 year old Bluesbreakers record.

THE COVER

The laminated Robert Stace gatefold cover is in fantastic condition with only very minor laminate creasing and wear to the top and bottom edges. There is no writing or marks of any kind, the colours are absolutely vibrant on the front and the rear, the inside spread is almost perfect. The corners and edges again are in great condition with the spine virtually unblemished, square and straight with all the writing perfectly clear, remarkable for a 42 year old cover

THIS ALBUM WILL BE SENT IN A LARGE BOX WITH CARDBOARD STIFFENERS THE VINYL AND COVER WILL BE INSERTED SEPARATELY IN POLY SLEEVES AND WRAPPED WITH PLENTY OF BUBBLEWRAP FOR ADDED PROTECTION.
