FAITH. NO MAN./7"

First release by the band that would become, a short time later, known as FAITH NO MORE. You can read the story about this record in several places online, and mostly they mirror the Wikipedia version. My version is slightly different.

I was a buyer at Rough Trade distribution in San Francisco from 1981-1983, and in such capacity bought this single from one of the chaps in the band. They booked themselves a gig in a support slot at the infamous "On Broadway" to celebrate the release of this record, and that's really where the story gets good.

They weren't really a punk band per-se, more of what would be considered post-punk at the time, and maybe alternative rock ten years later. The On Broadway was above the infamous Mabuhay Gardens (aka The Fab Mab), The Mab was originally a Filipino restaurant, until Ness, the owner, let Dirk Dirksen book punk and new wave bands there. It became to SF, what CBGBs was to New York. Dirk was as annoying as h*ll, so eventually he and Ness fell out, and he started booking the tiny ballroom upstairs, aka the On Broadway.

The short story is that guys who wear eyeliner didn't mix too well with the HC crowd in the early 80s, and the story is continued elsewhere in our auctions for this week. Check it out.

There were only a few hundred of these pressed, there are TWO auctions listed on popsike in the last FIVE years. You get the drift.

"Quiet in Heaven" and "Song of Liberty" are two songs released together as a double single and is the only official release by Faith No Man (stylized as Faith. No Man.), before the majority of their members quit and formed Faith No More.

The songs were recorded in Matt Wallace's parent's garage, were Wallace had set up and been running a recording studio, while the band was still under the name of 'Sharp Young Men'[ with Mike Morris, William Gould, Mike Bordin and Wade Worthington, who left shortly after. They changed their name to Faith No Man for the release of the single, which featured two of the three songs recorded in Wallace's garage, and hired Roddy Bottum to replace Wade. Bottum, Gould and Bordin quit the band shortly after and formed Faith No More without any constant guitarists or vocalists until they eventually settled on Chuck Mosley and Jim Martin.
