Anyone who still thinks that Ella's Decca period was nothing but a big commercial pop wasteland ought to be sentenced to many years of hard labor searching in used record bins for this great anthology from 1957. Thanks to Decca founder Jack Kapp's habit of pairing up his label's performers, Ella made recordings with an all-star selection of great black musicians of mid-century, and practically all of their records were concise gems. Louis Armstrong turns up four times here in tracks that prefigure and often surpass their later Verve discs in joie de vivre. There are two irresistible encounters with Louis Jordan and His Tympany Five, including their swinging calypso hit "Stone Cold Dead in the Market" and a sly "Baby, It's Cold Outside." The protean arranger Sy Oliver makes a suave singing appearance in "Don'cha Go Away Mad," and Ella's spare, soulful rendition of "I Gotta Have My Baby Back" with the Mills Brothers stops the show cold. Ella's other fellas include the Ink Spots, Eddie Heywood, the Delta Rhythm Boys, and as a nostalgic treat, the original Chick Webb waxing of "A-Tisket, A-Tasket." The sound, by the way, is ungimmicked, un-NoNoised, unfiltered mono -- a compelling enough reason to hunt for this LP rather than put up with CD desecrations of some of this material.

While Ella Fitzgerald would continue to records critically and commercially acclaimed albums after her DECCA tenure (1945-1955), notably for Norman Granz’ Verve family of labels, many Jazz vocals aficionados, ourselves included, feel very strongly that she reached her creative and artistic peak during these early years, in which she recorded five albums for DECCA.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)            The record comes in a poly-lined stock inner sleeve, which has - apparently with success - shielded the vinyl from the harmful impact of elements over many years!

(c)           The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(d)          This is the original flat-edged pressing

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD+++.

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging. (nothing significant)

-         Back cover has a small original price sticker, which may be possible to remove with a little effort (we did not attempt to)

-         Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1 (front side) and 2 (back side).

-         Cover has a partially split bottom seam (less than 1 inch / 2.5 centimeters)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)

-        No wrinkles or creases

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No tearing: no chips, dents or nicks on the seams

-        No peel-off marks

-        No stains

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
