Title:

'Runaway With Del Shannon'

Tracklist: Misery, Day Dreams, His Latest Flame, The Prom, The Search, Runaway, I Wake Up Crying, Wide Wide World, I'll Always Love You, Lies, He Doesn't Care, Jody

One of the rarest early stereo rock-a-billy albums in existence.

There weren't too many really good rock & roll albums released in America (or anywhere else) in 1961, and considering that Runaway With Del Shannon was slapped together to take advantage of the single "Runaway"'s number one chart position, it comes off amazingly well. A handful of cuts off of this album, including "Lies" and "Jody," frequently end up on anthologies of Shannon's work, but there is a bit more here to appreciate. The opening track, "Misery," is a catchy Doc Pomus/Mort Shuman number that shows off Shannon in the same pained, romantic mode as "Runaway," and "Day Dreams" and "(Marie's the Name) His Latest Flame" are similarly successful, though the latter song fared far better a few months later in the hands of Elvis Presley. Some of the rest is a good deal less appealing, especially when Shannon tries straight romantic crooning, as on "The Search" or "I'll Always Love You." "I Wake up Crying" and especially "Wide Wide World" are successful album tracks, and the latter, at a somewhat quicker tempo, might even have made a good single. The stereo version of the album (and the accompanying master) was considered lost for many years and goes for large amounts of money.

Condition:

Record: NM (Both labels are pristine, there are hardly any signs of ever being played. Not graded MINT only because I cannot verify that this record is actually unplayed)

Cover: EX+ (Thick cardboard cover is really in amazing shape)

Grading:

All records have been visually graded unless otherwise stated.

Mint (M): A brand new record that has certainly never been played or is still factory sealed. Cover or box has no obvious defects;

Near Mint (NM): The highest grade for an used record. Almost no signs of being played, perhaps a spindle mark or barely noticeable light mark where record has been removed from the inner sleeve. Cover or box may have minor ring wear but no bends, creases or writing whatsoever;

Excellent (EX): Record has only a few light (non-sounding) marks and has been well preserved. There is very little lessening in sound quality. Cover or box has slightly more wear than NM;

VG: The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Cover or box may have a pronounced ring wear, seam splits, writing, discoloration and general wear or tear (Details are indicated in the descripion);

Note: + or - may be used to indicate slight variations in quality within each rating.
