In December 1945 Dizzy Gillespie took a group including Charlie Parker to Los Angeles to play at Billy Berg's nightclub. After the engagement Dizzy returned to New York while Charlie Parker stayed behind. Parker approached George Russell, the founder of Dial Records, and they wrote an one-year recording contract.

The first session took place in Los Angeles on March 28, 1946, followed by further six sessions until December 1947. The last three sessions were in in New York, and unlike the California sessions they were made with Parker's regular band including Miles Davis, Duke Jordan, Tommy Potter and Max Roach.

These recordings represent the cornerstone and the foundation block of the Modern Jazz. What Stravinsky and Berg are to the 20th century classical music, what Cezanne, Picasso and Braque are for abstract painting, what Brancusi is for the primitive-modern sculpture, what  Georges Méliès,  D. W. Griffith, Charlie Chaplin, Fritz Lang, Orson Welles and Lilian Gish are for the art of Film,  what WC Handy, Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters are for Blues,  what the Beatles are for the Rock in general and what Elvis Presley's Sun recordings are for the Rock & Roll in particular,  and what Jimmie Rodgers and Hank Williams Sr. are for the Country & Western,  Charlie Parker's Dial recordings are for the Modern Jazz. This is it, folks. This is where it all began and congealed. The Alpha (but not the Omega) of Modern Jazz.

·                               CONDITION:

·                               RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant). For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(c)           The record has an "ear" symbol (a pretzel-like engravure about 1/4-inch/6mm long) in the trail-off vinyl, which on SOME  jazz and blues labels (such as Blue Note; Folkways; Period, etc…) is associated with very early or first pressings). The 'ear' symbol is actually a letter 'P' in italic script, denoting a pressing made by Plastylite Corporation’s pressing plant.

(d)          This is the original flat-edge pressing

(e)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(f)            Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a partially split bottom seam (less than 1 inch / 2.5 centimeters)

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging   (nothing significant).

-         Visible shelf wear noted on the seams

-         Cover has a tiny "wrinkle" (crease)  in one of the corners.

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No tearing: no chips, dents or nicks on the seams

-        No peel-off marks

-        No stains

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
