Cairo Free Jazz Ensemble

“Heliopolis”

Original 1970 LP produced by the Deutsches Kulturinstitut, Goethe Intitut, Cairo

Signed by Hartmut Geerken (and, I am guessing, by Salah Ragab) and dedicated to Sun Ra

This is a pretty far-out and pretty RARE LP!

Salah Ragab is better-known to jazz aficionados here as the leader of the remarkable Cairo Jazz Band:

“Chief of the Military Music Department, Salah Ragab had at his disposal a vast retinue of musicians (almost 3,000!) all versed in the aural language of marches and national anthems, but with little knowledge of the more fluid aspects of contemporary jazz. From this foundation Ragab went on to carve a sound that is at once familiar and completely alien, using his own skills on the drums to inform and sculpt the vivacious music on offer...” -- http://www.boomkat.com/item.cfm?id=27161

Hartmut Geerken is a German polymath and percussionist who is an expert on Sun Ra as well as on the ethnomycology of Afghanistan - and many, many other things as well.
