By know you know that the
first STEREO pressing of Bob Dylan's first album on the impossible "six
eye" label is near-impossible to find: it can easily fetch upward of
$1,000.00 on the open market. And here’s why it is so rare:
Three years ago, we met at
one of the local record shows in New York City a gentleman named Marc (we did
not remember his last name). At the time Dylan’s first record was released, he
was about 18 and – at least so he claimed – he was working as a bike messenger
for Columbia Records headquarters in NY City and had personally hand-delivered
a production order signed by John Hammond, Sr.
for 500 stereo and 3000 mono copies of this album. We do not have any
means of independently verifying this information, but judging by the colossal
rarity of this album, we find the story altogether credible.
And those 500 stereo copies
– that was it, folks. There would be no
more. No additional press runs on this particular label was ever ordered.
Columbia would soon phase out the “six-eye” label altogether and introduce the
new, black and red “360 stereo label”, and so all subsequent pressings of this
album (as well as the first pressings
of the next four Dylan albums) would appear on this, new Columbia label.
We would be willing to bet
big money that, out of those 500 copies initially produced, less than 200
survive worldwide and that, out of those 200, probably less than 100 copies can
be accounted for. Of those 100,
probably less than 70 copies are in playable condition. And of those 70,
probably less than 20 are promotional.
How many of those promotional copies are still NEAR MINT (like the one
we are offering here) after almost half a century? Nobody knows. Our qualified
guess is less than 10. This is one of those monumentally rare pieces. A
cornerstone – if not the proverbial Holy Grail – for any Dylan collector.
Now for the music: this
truly IS a piece of history: this is an album that announced Bob Dylan’s
arrival to the unsuspecting world; the work that started the entire Dylan cult,
which would follow merely a year or so later, on the heels of his next album
(“Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan”). Capably produced by the legendary John Hammond, Sr.
(who, among others, discovered such stars as Billie Holiday, Robert Johnson,
Aretha Franklin and Bruce Springsteen and was the father-in-law of Benny
Goodman and the father of John Hammond, jr (you figured as much, didn’t ya?) ,
the album shows Bob Dylan's deep and genuine love for all forms of archetypal
musical Americana, particularly traditionals, spirituals, folk, blues and work
song, but also his evolving, maturing ability as a songwriter.
The PROMOTIONAL, RADIO
STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we
have here) were often distributed among the radio stations before the record
was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead. These
records are generally considered to be the "first among equals",
which is to say the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings
of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing
of the record.

WE GRADE THE VINYL AS NEAR MINT.
Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs - are (barely) visible, but are probably
inaudible, and do not affect visual
integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and
the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

The record comes in a hi-grade MFSL PVC inner sleeve, which has -
apparently with success - shielded the record from the harmful impact of
elements over many years!

The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which
was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on
such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not
expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!
(d)
Stereo pressing of this title
is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its mono counterpart. The mix is more graphic, the sound resolution more
precise, and the channel separation (which does not exist on mono version) adds
a whole new dimension to the music. Also, the stereo mixes are (by
definition) somewhat different than on the mono version. We estimate that mono
copies of this album outnumber stereo copies
by a ratio of at least 5:1.

Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior,
digital recording!!!

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT

imperfections are noted on the cover:

Paper slick on the top seam has a 2-inch “crack” in it
(there are NO split seams, as the cardboard base remains intact; only the paper
slick has a small crack in it)

Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On
the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and
10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1
(front side) and 5 (back side).

Cover has some tiny, faint writing on its back side (a small
filing code written in one corner)

Minor shelf wear noted on the seams (nothing significant)

Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine
