This is a rare early experimental radio transcription that plays at 33 1/3 rpm. Pretty high-tech for 1932, only radio stations had the specialized turntables to play this. (This experiment failed because the vinyl used to make the record at this speed was too soft for sustained use. It had to wait another 15 years for improvements in materials and technology before it could become practical). AND, it is a very fine example of early Duke Ellington music. A pretty neat combination of rarity and fine music. To top it off, this disc even comes with the original sleeve!

Incidentally, for this recording session, 2 seperate recording setups were used - 2 different mics and 2 different recording machines. They wanted to be sure to get this recording in 1 session. They picked the best of the 2 for this transcription and put the 2nd recording in the 'vault'.

In 1981, someone discovered a test pressing of the 2nd recording and realized it was a match to the one released here but from a different location in the studio and that the 2 recordings could be paired to produced a STEREO recording of this session, so that's what they did. It was released on LP in 1985 and is now also available on CD. An actual accidental stereo recording of Duke Ellington from 1932 and this transcription is one channel from that! How cool is that?
